Wi-SUN President/CEO Phil Beecher Visited Taiwan to Facilitate IoT Development

Vertexcom Technologies Launches Wi-SUN Wireless IoT System-Level Single-Chip Solution

Taipei, Taiwan, June 6, 2018 - Wi-SUN (Wireless Smart Utility Network) Alliance President/CEO Phil Beecher visited Taiwan Communications Industry Development Project Office of Industrial Development Bureau and Computex Taipei to witness the vigorous development of Taiwan’s information and communications industry. During the visit, Beecher also visited local Wi-SUN Alliance member companies Vertexcom, NextDrive and NetKlass to help expand Taiwan’s emerging IoT industry in the 5G era.

Wi-SUN technology is known as the Wi-Fi of the Internet of Things which is suitable for low-power long-distance IoT applications. Wi-SUN can be used on free public frequency bands and as a complementary technology to NB-IoT developed by telecom manufacturers. At present, Taiwan’s Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection has designated Wi-SUN as a standard for Route B between smart meters and HANS (Home Area Networks). The communication network enables various automatic control of power generation, energy storage, power usage, and power distribution, providing a reliable communication infrastructure for the upcoming Energy IoT. Japan, South Korea, the US, and emerging countries such as India, Brazil, and South Africa have all adopted Wi-SUN as a communication standard for the smart grid IoT.

“Wi-SUN Alliance seeks to accelerate the implementation of smart grids, smart cities, smart utilities and large-scale outdoor IoT applications by enabling the global adoption of interoperable solutions based on open standards,” Beecher said. Wi-SUN Alliance has more than 170 member companies worldwide and the ecosystem includes semiconductor companies, module makers, system software, and cloud platforms. Beecher pointed out that Vertexcom Technologies is currently the only IC design company in Taiwan of Wi-SUN Alliance and is one of the regional ambassadors to assist educate the industry and promote Wi-SUN standard.

“Vertexcom’s Wi-SUN platform is selected as the CTBU (Certified Test Bed Unit) at the 800 MHz for Indian and European frequency bands,” Dr. HH Li, President of Vertexcom Technologies. “We are committed to the development of IoT communication solutions based on open standards to provide customers with high-efficient, low-power, long-distance, and 100% IoT connectivity through reliable wired and wireless dual-mode technology to realize the IoT vision of everything connected.”
